Chiunque si sia trovato con una scheda che da un giorno all’altro ha smesso di funzionare penso che si sia posto questa emblematica domanda.
Tutte le schede dei giochi Arcade vengono messe costantemente a dura prova perchè restano accese per ore ed ore in qualsiasi condizione di caldo o freddo poi sul più bello ci abbandonano magari nel bel mezzo della stagione.
Secondo la scienza, i colpevoli più comuni sono i cosiddetti whisker, piccoli filamenti metallici simili a capelli, che crescono sullo strato di stagno utilizzato per coprire i circuiti elettronici. Queste fibre causano spesso cortocircuiti, perché agiscono da ponti elettrici, conducendo l’elettricità tra componenti che dovrebbero invece rimanere isolati. Ma come e perché, a un certo punto della vita di un dispositivo, si generano i whisker? La scienza, finora, non era riuscita a dare una risposta al problema.
A trovare il bandolo della matassa è stato Yong Sun, studente di dottorato in ingegneria meccanica al College of Engineering della University of South Carolina. Sun ha utilizzato una tecnica detta correlazione delle immagini digitali, con la quale ha monitorato i cambiamenti che avvengono sulle superfici dei circuiti, riuscendo così a dimostrare che la crescita dei whisker sarebbe dovuta a un gradiente di deformazione che si accumula all’interno del dispositivo. In sostanza, i componenti elettrici generano i maligni filamenti a causa degli stress meccanici ed elettrici cui sono sottoposti nel tempo. Il lavoro di Sun è stato pubblicato sulla rivista Scripta Materialia ed è valso al suo autore il prestigioso premio Student Acta.
L’importanza della scoperta va ben oltre l’estensione del ciclo di vita dell’ elettronica di consumo: anche la Nasa potrebbe essere interessata, dato che molti guasti ai satelliti commerciali sono causati proprio dai whisker. E lo stesso potrebbe valere per sistemi missilistici, centrali nucleari e pacemaker.
Ora la domanda è come difenderci dai whisker? Io sicuramente non sono uno scienziato da premio Nobel ma posso dire che tenendo le schede pulite e lontano dall’umidità ne allungherebbe sicuramente la vita.
Una scheda piena di polvere e con le ventole sporche sicuramente ha meno vita di una scheda perfettamente arieggiata.
